I got a job!

dang! I was getting soo use to this:

100 years of magazine covers

I recently purchased a book called Design Evolution Theory Into Practice. In the book they show projects through process. It's amazing to see comps, sketches and everything that comes through process as big time firms/agencies create award winning work. One piece that caught my eye was a book design for 100 Years of Magazine Covers by Research Studios (London, United Kingdom).

"British book publishers, Black Dog Publishing approached RS to art direct a book celebrating 100 Years of Magazine Covers written by Steve Taylor, who worked with Neville on both The Face and Arena magazines.

Using a vivid colour palette, strong chapter breaks and breakout pages - we were able to bring a decade of amazing magazine covers together in one book - retaining an emphasis on the covers where needed without being to repetitive. With a strong history in magazine design RS applied magazine like elements to the book making it a book to read as much as a book of visual inspiration.

Applying a spot UV gloss to the cover, round back binding and printed ends papers RS have added a 'one to keep' value to a book intended to be a reference for the past 100 years in cover design." - www.researchstudios.com

vainilla

As of yesterday we've been taking care of our neighbors blind cat Vainilla (vanilla in English, pronounced vah-nee-ah) while they're on vacation in the Dominican Republic. I've never really been a cat kinda guy up until recently. It doesn't really help that I'm totally allergic to them... but I think cats have way more loyalty then a dog and they're so much more independent and less maintenance. All three of those characteristics are a home run in my book. I haven't decided if I want a dog or a cat when I move out... but I'm leaning more towards a cat. Who knows though. I just love when Vainilla just comes to hangout whenever my brother and I are working on our cars and she'll come over to say hi in the morning.

where are tony the tiger, tucan sam & wendel?

It's almost impossible for there NOT to be a knock off something we all love so dearly (I like to call them fake). I was at CVS today and saw these and got a good laugh out of them. I'm so curious as to how these taste... but I love the originals way too much to even try them for just $1. Maybe someday.

One of my favorite professors from school (Mike Lowery) just recently published a book filled with his illustrations. I contributed by scanning and color correcting all of his illustrations for him. He has had numerous shows and exhibitions in the area over the years and his work can be seen in a lot of periodicals (both online and print). In 2006 he had an exhibit at the Chinese Contemporary in Beijing, China.

get juicy!

As a designer you always have those projects you love... but for some reason or another you don't show in your "portfolio". Anywho... I'm no package designer but here's an identity/package for fruit snacks called Juicy Snacks. Enjoy.

Oh yeah....

out with the old >> in with the new

fun with brands

It's insane when you try and think about how much brands we use in a day. From the second we wake up up until we go to sleep, each person uses a countless amount of brands in a day. They are everywhere, from the type of toothpaste you use (I sure hope you do at least) to the make of car you drive (honda!). There's this lady who goes by the name of "Jean Simple" who has a blog and she recorded the brands she used in a 24/7 period. All I can say is... pretty damn interesting to say the least.

JUST in my last few minutes I've used: General Mills, Apple, Colgate, Oral B, Pantene Pro V, Dove, Got2b Glued, American Eagle, Nike & Hanes to name a few. Wow.. my list would be endless in a 24 hour span.

green label art

Mountain Dew released (in February) a line of limited edition bottles called Green Label Art which features artwork from artists such as Troy Denning, PJ Richardson, MAZE & many more. I'm not a fan of Mountain Dew but these are super cool! Check out: www.greenlabelart.com

According to nicekicks.com: A lot of buzz has been created about the Mountain Dew “Green Label Art” where famous artists got the chance to infuse art into the citrus beverage. Some of the names on the list of artists include jeffstaple, Methamphibian, Haze, and our good friend from Houston, Dez. A friendly contest was held and Dez’s design was declared the winner.

For those who don’t know much about Dez of Ism Apparel, its time to get familiar. Dez is an artist that wears many different hats. He does graffiti, graphic design, and sneakers just to name a few of his specialties. Some of his work includes the logo for Kickz Houston, Yakuza Air Force Ones, and most recently the Custom Air Jordan XX3 x Air Force 1 Fusions which got attention even at the Oregon office of Jordan Brand.

Stupid is such an understatement

Ok... so think of the stupidest thing you've ever done and now multiply it by a million and you have this guys video. Wow! I was watching MSNBC the other day and apparently this guy and his child got out just in time. I've done some pretty stupid things in my day... but nothing close to this (and not on tape). I'm totally speechless. I've always wondered if he ever had the rights to this video or do they just belong to the bank? I wouldn't even have that released for a million dollars. Um... ok maybe I would.

Yummy :P

brand new nikes always make me happy. Oh I got another pair but they're ugly;)

*gulp*

Life is filled with those oh so good nervous "cant sleep at night" events. We all have gone through them. Once they are over, we almost ALWAYS look back at them and laugh about how nervous we were before hand. Even if they go well, there is always ATLEAST one thing we would of done different or one question we could of asked if we had the chance to do it over again.

My best friend just recently started his first "real job" as a graphic designer since graduating from college. We were hanging out the other night and he told me he was nervous for his first day. I made a joke and asked him if he had his lunch box and book bag packed and if he was going to remember to tie his shoes. I'm only 22 years old... so I haven't had THAT many "cant sleep at night" nervous events in my life thus far... but a first real job can easily be thrown on that list for anyone. Very soon I will be starting my first real job as a graphic designer and I'm super nervous for my first day. I however can throw in: first date, first day of high school, college graduation & job interviews to that list VERY proudly.

I just recently saw Drillbit Taylor for the first time and I loved it! If you haven't seen it... go out and rent it! It made me think back to how I felt during my first day of high school & college like it was just yesterday (minus the bullies of course). Man time sure does fly... it's crazy.

First Post!
